Grassroots video is a creating, editing, sharing video site like youtube except for you create the video on the site. Grassroots video relate to education by presenting work and videos of examples and instructions. One major trend is 3D Computing this comes into grassroots video by virtual tours, 3D movies, projections and cartoon movies. I think in the future all classes can be online with just a video demonstration or a live video of what we are supposed to do. The pros for having a live video is that you will only have a set time to do the work in an you dont flake off and do it in your own time but the cons are that if you dont get it the teacher cant really redo it and so with pre recorded videos of work you can re watch them if you dont get it and puase it while you work and when your up to that stage then keep playing it. Kind of like Atomic Learning. I found that really worked for me and perhaps in the future all classes can be like that.
The SPCA
The SPCA is our theme and we have linked grassroots video with our curricular subjects with the theme of the SPCA. We have done everything possible to make them fit together in some way or other. The SPCA was a relatively easy choice for most subjects except kind of difficult for music and technology. The SPCA NZ was started in 1885 in Dunedin and spread around the country. It is a fantastic cause and helps the animal welfare. Ellena and myself are very passionate about animals and keeping them safe so this was a good theme for us to choose. Also thank you to the SPCA for having a very informative website, being very friendly and willing and letting us film on location.
Examples for different school aged children.
Junior/Primary
Topic: Educating young minds and raising awareness Many children at this age will be begging their parents for a pet but most parents say no. Well if we educate the children on the SPCA and they tell their parents that if they adopt a pet from the SPCA they will be helping the community and the animals parents are more likely to sya yes to a pet from the SPCA than a petshop or breeder. Also they are cheaper from the SPCA because most of them arent pure breds. Using the SPCA website teachers can get into the education part and click on whatever subject they teach and the SPCA have a list of things or worksheets you can do for the class to help them learn about the SPCA using that subject. A volunteer at your local SPCA may even be able to come in and talk to your class about it. There is the SPCA school holiday program which is fun and educating too.
Topic: Career Focus
Everyone at this age should be starting to think about what they want to do when they leave school and the SPCA has a heap of volunteerong and paying jobs that a student interested in animals might want to do. You could be a Canine Attendant, Foster CO-ordinator, Inspector, Isolation Ward Nurse, IT and Web manager, Operations manager, Retail team member, Rural animal technician, Senior feline attendant, Veterinarian, Vet Nurse. Again anyone from your local SPCA can come and talk about their job and explain to you to full extent what their job means, includes, does etc. You can come into the SPCA and have a look around and perhaps come for a day to try out. Or for school do some community service work there. Or you can do The school holiday program at the SPCA whicih teaches you how to look after animals correctly and you get to be a volunteer for a day or two.

Interview with someone who bought two kittens from the SPCA
Why did you choose the SPCA to adopt your kittens rather than buying from a pet shop or a breeder? We had heard that the SPCA were desperate to find homes for the many kittens they had during the summer. We have planned to have a pet cat for some time and decided to get a kitten after we had been away during the summer. The timing of this coincided with the SPCA’s plea to the public. We wanted to give a loving home to an animal and then decided that it would be nice to get 2 kittens as they can keep each other company.
Do you think you made the right decision? Yes, the kittens are smothered with love and affection every day and they are going to make great family pets. It makes us very happy to know that we have given them a quality of life that they may not have otherwise had. The vet at the SPCA saw them a week after they came home and commented on how happy they are (purring constantly) so that makes us feels What is your impression of the SPCA? I think they do a great job. Many of the people who work there are volunteers and it is obvious they have a love for animals. It is sad to see sick and wounded animals in their care but humbling to know that they are out of danger and are being cared for.
SPCA also have a very good way of communicating with public and they provide good practical advice when people are interested in getting a pet. The staff were very helpful and knowledgeable when advising and helping with our decision. The fact that the kittens are desexed and vaccinated before they leave the SPCA really helps, especially if cost is a concern.

Vicky Dawson, manager of the Bitter Root Humane Association said that with the economic downturn, she is worried about what the future might bring.
We usually average a large case per year, But within the last 12 months, we’ve had three, Dawson says. Everyone is predicting there will be more. With the downturn in the economy, people are struggling to pay to care for their animals. Taken from website twoFamily Pets: Victims of Hard Economic Times
The recent U.S. economic downturn has caused people to reduce their discretionary spending on things such as restaurants, clothing, and recreation, and falling home prices have led to foreclosures, builder bankruptcy, and loss of jobs in construction and mortgage brokerage firms. It has also created a new wave of pets that have lost their homes as a result of abandonment by their owners.
The abandonment (which is illegal) or relinquishment of an animal by its owner during a move is nothing new; most shelters house a large number of animals whose owners moved and didn’t or wouldn’t take their pets with them. To those who support shelters, this is one of the more infuriating reasons for relinquishing a pet. Taken from website three
But two new reasons for relinquishing or abandoning pets have been realised more frequently in recent months. Some people can no longer afford the cost of keeping them, and others are being evicted from their homes. When I searched up Economic Downturn facing us to neglect animals every website said the same thing. The Global credit crisis is making people redundant or forcing them to get evicted. This means they are obviously running out of money so they have to make the decision – feed their kids or feed their dogs. People all around the world are losing money and cannot afford the vet bills, accommodation for their pets while they’re away or money for food. Also people are working overtime so they have no time to give their pets the love and care and time of day that they need. We think that the global depression is a big deal for us, well it is but for the domestic animals, it’s even worse. They can’t get a job or food. They can’t do anything for themselves so they depend on us.
